Alyzia was one of the most important cities of ancient Acarnania. The founder of the city was Alyzeus, son of Icarius and brother of Penelope, wife of Odysseus, and of Lefkadius, who founded Lefkada.

The city stretched from the settlement where Kato Kandila is today to Mytikas in the Voulkos Kablafkas bay where the anchorage and shipyards were located.

The inhabitants of ancient Alyzia were engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry, fishing, shipbuilding and trade.

In the Alexandrian years 350-250 BC ancient Alyzia flourished. Silver and bronze coins were minted with the head of Hercules, as well as silver staters.

The Alyzians were allies of the Athenians and remained loyal to them in late times. This communication brought the Alyzians into contact with arts. They were particularly fond of sculpture and brought in great sculptors to adorn their city and their sanctuaries.
