Built at an altitude of 600 meters, Archontochori in Etoloakarnania is one of the most mountainous villages in the region. It is a beautiful traditional village with a rich history. The image of the village is extremely charming with its stone-built two-storey mansions with tiled roofs.
The first name of the village was Zavitsa, a name given by Slav-Bulgarian conquerors. In 1927 the village was renamed “Archontochorion” after the old mansion houses of the original village.
In Kandila, Etoloakarnania, was in ancient times Alyzia. Its extent reached as far as the neighbouring village of Mytikas, opposite the island of Kalamos.
The village of Kandila is located at a height of 80 meters above sea level and basically consists of two villages, Pano and Kato Kandila.
The village is built on the ruins of earlier settlements, including the settlement founded by the first descendants of ancient Alyzia.
The economy of the inhabitants and their life was and still is characterized by agro-pastoral activities.
